Hi /sci/,
I'm in Phil. Nuclear Research Institute for the remainder of the summer, and I have access to their Cobalt-60 radiation source.

What do you want me to Irradiate? (I only have until the 22nd of May to conduct experiments)

I was thinking of irradiating spiders.

How about rats? They are mammals but are also pests. You can check if they can still navigate thru mazes, and respond to cat pee.

Also cockroaches, to validate those theories that they will still survive under post-apocalyptic conditions.

I joined their training program this summer

>ano ba ang goal ng PNRI?
To regulate the use of Radioactive Materials in the philippines and advance the peaceful use of nuclear energy in the country.

Since i'm scared of roaches, and cats will have PAWs dumping burning crosses on my backyard, I have decided to go ahead with Spiders.

I have 20+ spiders, and I chose 5 of the healthiest, and this is my plan:
1 spider: Control (meaning i won't touch it)
4 spiders: will go under various radiation doses ranging from 100-400 Grays in increments of 100 Grays.

I present to you the control spider.
Alias "Negro" (because he's 95% black)

Astig, talagang may name pa ha. Swerte si Negro. Doktor Oktopus looks dangerous. Boy Tsino looks like a fly. Bakit El Pedo?

It would have been better if all were of the same specie.

What do you plan to do with the other 15?

Parang kulang yung number to establish experimental validity. I think you should have more than 1 spider for each group. This is also to guard against errors.

Well I hope you'll get interesting results. Post your results again :)

The spider spun a complete web (frame, circular structure) within two days after being released into the simulated habitat container. Spider eats normally, and remains active.

Doktor Oktopus is still aggro suprisingly.
The spider managed to spin an erratic web. It still eats normally though.

However, I noticed that his skills in producing webs have diminished greatly. I see him trying to get the goo out of its silk glands in vain.

El Pedo was still alive at 400Gy (humans can only take up to 5 Gy before they fall and die on the spot)! And you know what. She was a girl all along -.-" She layed a fuckton of eggs after the irradiation, i couldnt get clear shots cuz of my great camera. Anyhow, the eggs i believe are going to be spawning mutant spiders (some chromosomal aberrations must have occurred during the irradiation i presume) so i destroyed all of them.

El Pedo had difficulty in spinning a web over the smaller spider which it was supposed to eat. Though it had capabilities to produce small amounts of silk, it was not able to produce a web.

and for the conclusion (very, very anticlimactic):

The spiders that received 300Gy and 400Gy radiation dosages had difficulties in producing silk. They showed no major behavioral changes.

sosyal ha, may technical assistant pa

Why did you destroy the eggs? Could be interesting if they hatch.

I know radiation causes mutations and cancers and stuff, but on the spot, how does a human die from radiation? Organ failures or something?

What makes spiders (or other animals) able to withstand more exposure to radiation? Is it their exoskeleton?
¨ No. 109

I don't have time to continue the research hehe.

>I know radiation causes mutations and cancers and stuff, but on the spot, how does a human die from radiation? Organ failures or something?

Cells can either die, mutate or self-repair from radiation. Organ cells can die from too much radiation but it will take time before you die, like a couple of days. You die from the mutated cells replicating and blocking the organ functionalities.

>What makes spiders (or other animals) able to withstand more exposure to radiation? Is it their exoskeleton?

Quick explanation: Less complicated biology means less organs to malfunction when exposed, some organs are more sensitive to other organs and humans have a whole plethora of organs some resistant some sensitive. Insects have the organs that are less sensitive to radiation.
